Cruising the Mid Murray: relax, explore, and step back in time
Ready to unwind and explore the beauty of the Mid Murray? Cruising along the river is one of the best ways to do it. Whether you’re keen to hop on a historic riverboat, enjoy a bit of luxury, or take things into your own hands with a houseboat, there’s a river adventure for everyone.
Hop aboard a heritage riverboat
If you’ve ever wanted to step back in time, the PS Marion and PW Mayflower, along with the soon-to-be-restored PS Canally, offer the perfect opportunity. These beautiful heritage riverboats give you a glimpse into what river travel was like in the old days—making it a truly special experience.
PS Marion: A living piece of Australian history
Built in 1897, the PS Marion is a beautifully restored paddle steamer that offers a true taste of the Murray River’s bustling steam era. Whether it’s the sound of the churning paddle wheels or the sight of the wood-fired steam engine, this is as authentic as it gets. You can even chat with the crew or throw a log into the furnace if you’re keen. Fully restored by volunteers in 1994, the PS Marion is one of the last steam-driven, wood-fired paddle steamers in the world, and it’s still cruising today. Whether you opt for a short one-hour cruise or a longer, overnight adventure complete with wood oven-cooked meals, the Marion is a must-experience for anyone visiting the Mid Murray.

PW Mayflower: South Australia's oldest paddle wheeler
The oldest paddle wheeler still operating in South Australia, the PW Mayflower has been cruising since 1884. After an extensive restoration, she’s back on the water and ready to take you on a 1.5-hour trip to the picturesque Ponde Cliffs. With room for up to 32 passengers, it’s a more intimate river experience, perfect for those looking to soak up the scenery and the history. Onboard, you can sip tea or coffee while learning from the captain about the river’s changing landscapes. Regular cruises run from the Mannum Dock Discovery Centre, so hop on and see the river like never before.
PS Canally: Returning to the river in 2025
Although not currently cruising, the PS Canally is set to be the next heritage paddle steamer to return to the Murray River. Built in 1907, this boat has a long and varied history, including transporting wool and dried fruits along the river. After years of neglect, it sank, but a team of passionate volunteers is hard at work restoring it. You can expect to see the PS Canally back on the water by 2025. Keep your eyes peeled for updates because this is going to be a big one for river enthusiasts.

Cruise in style on the Murray Princess
If you’re after something a little more modern but still with that paddleboat charm, the Murray Princess has you covered. It’s the largest inland paddle wheeler in the Southern Hemisphere, and it’s perfect if you want to cruise in comfort. There’s plenty of space to relax, delicious food onboard, and plenty of time to take in the stunning river views.
You can book anything from short, scenic trips to longer cruises that really let you soak in the atmosphere with live entertainment. Plus, with expert guides sharing fun facts along the way, you’ll come away knowing so much more about this beautiful part of the world.
Choose your own adventure on a houseboat
For the ultimate freedom, why not hire a houseboat and be your own captain? Houseboating is a fantastic way to explore the Mid Murray at your own pace. Picture this: waking up to the sound of birds, having your morning coffee while watching the river drift by, then spending the day fishing, swimming, or just kicking back with a good book. Bliss, right?
Whether you’re looking for a romantic escape, a fun family adventure, or just a chilled-out getaway with friends, there’s a houseboat to suit. And with plenty of towns along the way, you can pull in for a meal, grab supplies, or explore on land whenever you like.
If you’ve got your own boat, you’re in luck—there are lots of boat ramps and spots to make the most of your day out on the water. Whether you’re into water-skiing, fishing, or just cruising, the Murray River is yours to explore.
