Explore the Mannum Waterfalls

Just a quick 10-minute drive from Mannum, the Mannum Waterfalls are a beautiful spot to visit year-round. In winter, they’re spectacularly fast-flowing, while in the drier months, they reveal hidden nooks and crannies that are just as fun to explore. Located along the Mannum to Murray Bridge Road, the waterfalls are fed from the Adelaide foothills into Reedy Creek, and access is easy from two car parks—one offering a scenic one-kilometre walk, the other a shorter but steeper trek down to the falls.

The walking trails range from moderate to steep, winding through large granite outcrops and picturesque scenery. It’s a perfect spot for bushwalkers, with native plants, wildlife, and fascinating geology all around. If it’s rained recently, be sure to bring your camera—the falls are especially breathtaking after a downpour.

Pack hats, sunscreen, water, and sturdy shoes for a comfortable walk, and enjoy the area as a great spot for a picnic too. With stunning views and the sounds of nature, Mannum Waterfalls are one of the Mid Murray’s top inland adventures.

Discover the wonders of Shell Hill

Located near the Marne River, just 6km from Black Hill, Shell Hill is a fascinating geological site said to be around 5 million years old. The hill is named after its thick deposits of ancient oyster shells, some layers reaching up to six meters deep! These shells remained untouched until the 1930s when a crushing plant was set up to turn them into a fine powder, known as carbonate of lime. Though not particularly successful as fertiliser, it helped sweeten land in heavy rainfall areas. After a few years of operation, the plant eventually closed in 1946, but the unique site remains. Today, Shell Hill offers visitors a glimpse into the natural history of the region—a must-see for anyone curious about the geological wonders of the Mid Murray.

One of the standout tracks is the Lavender Federation Trail, a 325km journey that takes you through South Australia’s hidden gems, from the rolling hills of the Mt Lofty Ranges to charming small towns such as Tungkillo and Eudunda. The trail is a true community effort, built and maintained by passionate volunteers, and it’s packed with history, adventure, and stunning views.

Prefer to take in the sights from the comfort of your car? The Mid Murray’s scenic drives won’t disappoint. Start with the Murray River Scenic Cliffs Drive, where you’ll pass through quaint river towns and enjoy lookout points with incredible views of the river’s iconic cliffs. Don’t miss the Local Mannum Drive if you want to discover the town’s rich history and scenic spots, like the Mary Ann Reserve and Mannum Dock Discovery Centre.

For something more off the beaten path, the Morgan Nor-West Bend Scenic Loop Drive is a must. This drive takes you through beautiful landscapes and past Lock 2, before looping back to Morgan, giving you a taste of both riverfront and rural life.

And if you’re up for a real adventure, hit the Eagle View 4WD Track near Mannum. This 30km loop offers a mix of rugged farm tracks, old mining trails, and purpose-built sections that’ll get your adrenaline pumping!

Capture the beauty of the conservation parks

The Mid Murray’s conservation parks are a photographer’s dream, offering endless opportunities to capture the region’s stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife. Whether it’s the vibrant birdlife at Morgan Conservation Park, the striking cliffs near Ridley Conservation Park, or the serene red gum woodlands of Marne Valley Conservation Park, there’s always something picturesque to shoot. Don’t forget your camera when you visit Brookfield Conservation Park—you might just spot a southern hairy-nosed wombat or snap a rare shot of the nationally vulnerable malleefowl.

Explore historic towns

The Mid Murray is filled with charming towns and villages, each offering a unique blend of natural beauty and history. Inland, Truro is a quaint town where wheat meets wine, with rustic charm and a famous bakery. Morgan, once a bustling river port, invites visitors to explore its heritage railway precinct and the restored PS Canally, while Cadell is known for its scenic picnic spots and the annual Giant Pumpkin Competition.

For a true rural adventure, visit Cambrai and Keyneton, where you’ll find the natural wonder of Shell Hill and the renowned Henschke Wines. Sedan offers a glimpse into South Australia’s Lutheran heritage and is a great place to marvel at the historical hand-made stone walling as you travel along the Keyneton/Sedan Road. Tungkillo marks the start of the Lavender Federation Trail, and in Palmer, families can enjoy the quirky ‘Bear Rock’ and other unique rock formations. Be sure to keep an eye out for upcoming events in Palmer.

Swan Reach offers more than its breathtaking river views. History buffs can explore the Swan Reach Museum, which tells the town’s story and showcases how it survived the 1956 flood. Car enthusiasts will love the Mid Murray Classic Car Gallery, a volunteer-run collection of classic and vintage cars, perfect for a day out. Golfers can enjoy a round at the scenic Swan Reach Golf Course, or stroll through town and you’ll also find charming bric-a-brac stores to explore.
