Heritage Riverboats

The Mid Murray is home to a charming fleet of heritage riverboats that bring the rich history of the Murray River to life. These lovingly-restored vessels offer a unique glimpse into the past, showcasing the era of river trade and transportation. Each boat tells its own story and is a reflection of the dedication and passion of the volunteers who have preserved these pieces of maritime history.

The PS Marion, a fully-restored paddle steamer built in 1897 and recommissioned in 1994, continues to cruise the Murray River, transporting passengers back to the 1940s river trade era. The PS Marion is the last remaining authentic steam-driven, wood-fired paddle steamer with onboard accommodation in the world, and her journeys provide an unforgettable way to explore the river’s scenic beauty and historical significance.

The PW Mayflower, the oldest paddle wheeler in South Australia, has been brought back to her former glory from a 1913 commercial fishing vessel. The Mayflower now offers heritage cruises from Mannum, allowing visitors to experience the past while enjoying the river’s stunning landscapes. With weekly cruises (every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday) and commentary from the Captain, the Mayflower provides an educational experience for all ages.

Soon to join these historic riverboats is the PS Canally, set to begin cruising in 2026. Built in 1907 and once a vital part of river trade, the Canally is undergoing meticulous restoration at the Port of Morgan. This paddle steamer’s rich history, from trading wool and dried fruits to serving as a work boat and barge, adds another fascinating chapter to the story of the Murray River.

All three heritage boats, together with the Mannum Dock Discovery Centre, and the Port of Morgan facilities, offer a unique opportunity to explore the Mid Murray’s maritime past.
