Aboriginal Dreaming

Ngaut Ngaut is an ancestral being in Aboriginal Dreaming stories, sometimes described as a man, woman, demon, or fire demon. The stories about Ngaut Ngaut, including those of a giant-like man and a one-legged woman who teaches children about safety and culture, highlight the rich oral traditions and educational role of the site.

Educating others

The site plays a significant role in educating non-Indigenous Australians and the world about the rich history and archaeology of Indigenous Australians. Various Aboriginal groups, such as the Ngarrindjeri, Ngaiawang, and Ngarkat, are connected to the stories of Ngaut Ngaut. The Ngarkat people used the site as a water source during droughts and would camp by the river, engaging in ceremonies and intermarriages.
