Aboriginal Heritage

Ngaut Ngaut History of region

The Mid Murray, steeped in rich Aboriginal history, is the traditional land of the Nganguraku, Ngarrindjeri, Peramangk, Ngaiawang, Ngarkat, and Ngadjuri peoples. For thousands of years, these communities have nurtured a profound connection with the land, waterways, and natural resources. The Murrundi (Murray River) is central to their spiritual beliefs, traditional practices, and daily life.

Visitors can appreciate this deep connection at Ngaut Ngaut Conservation Park. Located near Nildottie, this 20-million-year-old site is one of South Australia’s most significant Aboriginal cultural locations. Experience guided tours by the Nganguraku people, explore the river boardwalk, and learn about the ‘Black Duck Dreaming’.

Keep an eye on our events page for events and activities throughout the year that celebrate First Nations culture.
