Wildlife

Native wildlife

Our region is bursting with native wildlife, offering a unique ecosystem that supports a variety of species, including some that are threatened or endangered.

Encounter iconic species like the southern hairy-nosed wombat, fat-tailed dunnart, common dunnart, red and western grey kangaroos, and emus. If you’re quiet and observant, you might also spot brushtail possums and skinks darting under dried leaves and deadwood.

Birdwatchers will find the Mid Murray a paradise, with sightings of the nationally vulnerable malleefowl, Australian ringneck parrots, hooded robins, and crested bellbirds. Don’t miss the endangered Mallee emu-wren, the vulnerable Regent parrot, pelicans, white-faced herons, and the majestic Wedge-tailed eagle, Australia’s largest bird of prey, soaring above the landscape.

The waters of the Murray River and its wetlands are alive with aquatic life. The iconic Murray cod, a species under threat, calls these waters home. Keep an eye out for the Eastern banjo frog or the threatened Southern bell frog in the wetlands.

Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect and preserve our wildlife. Visitors are encouraged to contribute by respecting nature and making every effort to protect native species. National parks and conservation areas, provide not only protection for wildlife but also opportunities for visitors to learn about the local ecosystem.

Maintaining the health of the Murray River system is crucial for the survival of many species. Ensuring good river flows and water quality is essential for supporting the diverse wildlife that depends on this unique ecosystem. Whether you’re an avid birdwatcher, a nature enthusiast, or someone who loves to explore, the Mid Murray offers endless opportunities to connect with and appreciate our incredible wildlife.
